Transportation between the apartments and the Community Building is provided
to those who need it. Foxdale also provides free transportation to shopping
centers, the local airport, and the local bus station. A city bus, free
to senior citizens, stops hourly, Monday through Saturday, at the Community
Building.
Foxdale has two dining areas, both in the Community Building; dress is
casual and seats are not assigned. Three meals are served daily. Dinner
is in the evenings except on Sundays when it is at noon. A choice of entrees
is offered.
Quaker-directed communities strive to provide an environment in which
residents initiate, direct, and plan their own activities. At Foxdale,
residents may choose to serve on a variety of committees set up by the
Residents Association. Some volunteer to serve on committees advisory
to the administration. Many residents are active members of such local
organizations as the Kiwanis, the League of Women Voters, Habitat for
Humanity, the Volunteer Center of Centre County, and the Centre County
Historical Society.
Penn State's "Go Sixty" program accepts senior citizens free of charge
for registration in its classes on a space available basis, and the university's
Elderhostel programs are open to seniors at a reduced "commuter" rate.
Under their continuing education programs, both the university and the
State College Area School District offer courses on many subjects.
Area libraries include Foxdale's, Penn State's Pattee, State College's
Schlow Memorial, and the Centre County Library and Historical Museum
in Bellefonte. Among other museums in the area are: at Penn State, the
Palmer Museum of Art, and minerals, entomological, anthropological,
and agricultural museums; in the area, Centre Furnace Mansion in State
College, Curtin Ironworks near Milesburg, and Boal Mansion and the Pennsylvania
Military Museum at nearby Boalsburg.
The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, held in downtown State
College and on campus in July, draws thousands of visitors; in the fall,
Penn State football attracts tens of thousands. Through-out the year,
there are dramatic offerings, lectures, and concerts on campus and,
in the summer, plays at Boalsburg's Boal Barn and Penn State's Centre
Stage.
Pennsylvania has many beautiful state parks, several near State College.
In addition to these, the Centre Region, which includes State College
and the five surrounding townships, has its own excellent park system.
One municipal park is only two blocks from Foxdale.
